May 17, 2006 · It's so easy to grease the starter with it on the car that you'll wonder why you never did it before. I followed the instructions about a year ago and haven't had any squeal since. Any old automotive grease works - the gears only turn for a few seconds each day.

Jun 07, 2010 · This area should be clean and dry. The brushes are compressed graphite, and will lubricate themselves and the commutator. If the brushes have gotten greasy somehow they are ruined, oil or grease turns the graphite dust into conductive tar that will basically short out adjacent commutator segments and reduce the starter's effectiveness.
Oct 14, 2012 · I may try and replace it if lubing it doesnt work. If the replacement still does it then I will learn to live with it or use the kick starter on the first start up and hope it lasts.

Sep 27, 2005 · I use a graphite lubricant I got from a lock smith. It is a liquid and I wanted a paste so I poured it into a cup and let the liquid carrier dry out so it is now a paste. I never liked the Kohler starter lubricant, it seems to dry out and cause the starter to act up. The Kohler starter lubricant is a soap base lubricant, what ever that is.

CAUTION: Do not use solvents other than petroleum spirits to wash the starter drive.
